How do I clean antique glass bottles?

Antique glass benefits from gentle washing with lukewarm water and a mild soap, avoiding harsh scrubbing on any exterior decoration or gilt surfaces. Wooden or leather caskets housing the bottles must be kept completely dry, using only a soft cloth for dusting the exterior timbers.

Were these sets meant for travel?

Many vanity and cologne bottle sets were specifically designed for travel, housed in robust leather or exotic timber boxes with secure locks to protect the glass during transit. Other larger configurations were intended purely as static dressing table displays, lacking the reinforced travel casing of their portable counterparts.

How do I identify the date of a set?

Silver collars and mounts provide the most reliable dating evidence through official hallmarks that record the assay office and year of testing. Stylistic indicators, such as Art Deco geometric forms or Victorian rosewood box construction, help narrow down the period when hallmarks are absent.

Are the stoppers usually original?

Original stoppers fit snugly and often share matching cut patterns or numbering with the glass body of the scent bottle. Replacements do occur due to accidental breakage over time, so inspecting the fit and glass colour helps determine originality.
