What games are in a compendium?

A games compendium typically houses equipment for multiple traditional pastimes within a single fitted wooden box. These collections often include boards, dice, counters, and cards for chess, backgammon, and other parlour games. The layout depends on the size of the box, ranging from compact folding folios to large Edwardian cabinets with multiple sliding trays.

How old is my game set?

Dating relies on materials, typography, and construction methods visible in the box and playing pieces. Victorian and Edwardian examples often feature specific box styles and labeling conventions. Comparing the box hinges, interior linings, and constituent woods helps narrow the period of manufacture alongside any maker marks present.

Are bone dominoes handmade?

Many nineteenth-century domino sets feature components carved by hand from bone, often during periods of conflict by prisoners of war. These pieces display individual tool marks and subtle variations in shape. Later commercial production shifted toward more uniform machining, but early examples retain distinct artisanal characteristics.

How should I store leather games boards?

Leather-bound faux book games boards benefit from stable indoor humidity and protection from direct sunlight to prevent drying and cracking. Keeping the surfaces clean preserves the decorative tooling. Folding or closing the boards carefully avoids stressing the original hinges and vellum or leather joints.
