What is an antique style solitaire ring?

An antique style solitaire ring is a piece of jewellery centred on one primary gemstone, styled after historical eras such as the Victorian, Edwardian, or Art Deco periods. These rings often feature hand-cut stones like old cut diamonds mounted in platinum or gold, reflecting design traditions from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

How do I identify the period of a ring?

Period identification relies on observing the stylistic markers, metal choices, and stone-cutting techniques visible in the mounting. Art Deco pieces show geometric symmetry, while Edwardian designs often display delicate filigree. Additionally, the use of platinum alongside yellow gold or white gold points toward specific decades of manufacture, ranging from Victorian times to the 1960s.

Can I wear an antique style ring daily?

Many of these rings are suitable for daily wear, provided the setting and band remain robust and secure. Platinum and higher karat golds offer durability for regular use. Gentle care and periodic inspection by a jeweller help preserve delicate old cut stones and intricate metalwork over time.

What stones are used besides diamonds?

While diamonds are common, these rings frequently incorporate sapphires, emeralds, opals, rubies, turquoises, amethysts, and high zircons. Coloured gemstones often serve as the central solitaire or complement diamond shoulders. These varied minerals reflect the diverse gemological preferences spanning from the nineteenth century through the mid-century era.
