How do I date antique pearl drop earrings?

Dating relies on combining the stylistic clues of the metalwork, such as Edwardian platinum settings or Georgian foil-backs, with the types of gemstones and cut of the diamonds present. Assay marks and specific fastening types like early wire hooks or dormeuse backs also provide reliable chronological markers.

Are natural pearls common in these earrings?

Many Victorian and Edwardian pieces incorporate natural pearls, especially those originating from earlier nineteenth-century workshops before cultured pearls became widespread. Documentation or gemological testing often confirms natural origin in finer examples.

Can I wear antique drop earrings daily?

Daily wear is possible with careful handling, though the delicate nature of antique gold, silver mounts, and historic pearl settings requires mindfulness during activities. Removing them before swimming, sleeping, or exercising helps preserve the integrity of the antique hooks and settings.

What metals were used in Victorian drops?

Victorian jewellers primarily worked in 9ct, 15ct, and 18ct yellow or rose gold, sometimes combining gold with silver settings on the face to make diamonds appear brighter. Platinum emerged towards the end of the Victorian era and became dominant during the subsequent Edwardian period.
