How were campaign boxes used?

Officers utilised campaign boxes to transport uniforms, maps, writing materials, and personal effects while on active service or foreign posting. The modular design allowed chests to be easily packed onto baggage animals or carts. Smaller desk boxes and writing slopes provided a stable surface for writing orders and correspondence in field tents or temporary quarters. Their secure locks protected sensitive documents from loss or weather damage.

Why use camphor wood for trunks?

Camphor wood was chosen for military trunks because its natural, pungent oil acts as a powerful insect repellent. This protected uniforms and paper documents from moths and silverfish during extended tropical postings. The timber is also relatively lightweight yet tough, handling the knocks of transport without splitting easily. Furthermore, camphor resists moisture, making it ideal for sea voyages.

How do I live with one?

Antique military boxes make exceptionally practical coffee tables, bedside cabinets, or blanket chests in modern homes. Their robust construction means they easily withstand daily use while providing concealed storage. To care for them, simply dust the timber regularly and polish the brass hardware with a soft cloth. Keep them away from direct heat sources to prevent the wood from drying out or splitting.
