Where should an antique marquetry panel be hung?

These wall art pieces suit reception rooms or hallways where lighting highlights the grain and colour variations of the wood veneers. Placing them away from direct sunlight preserves the natural tones of the timbers. Secure heavy panels using appropriate wall fixings suited to the weight of the solid wood backing and frame.

How do I care for antique wood inlay?

Maintain the surface by applying appropriate wax polish sparingly to nourish the timber without building up heavy residues. Avoid excessive moisture and sudden temperature changes that could cause veneers to lift. Dust gently with a soft dry cloth to protect the delicate intersections of the inlaid pieces.

What is the difference between marquetry and inlay?

Marquetry covers the entire surface of an object with fitted veneer pieces to form a complete picture or pattern. Inlay involves inserting contrasting materials into pre-cut depressions within a solid wood background. Both techniques create decorative surfaces but rely on different structural methods.

How can I tell the period of a panel?

Dating relies on identifying the underlying timber, construction methods, and stylistic cues such as Jacobean carving or Arts and Crafts lettering. Examining the reverse side often reveals period-specific timber preparation and fixings. Comparing the decorative motifs against known periods helps narrow down the year of manufacture.
