How do I date a mahogany frame?

Dating relies on observing the structural characteristics, tool marks left by the maker, and the prevailing style of the period, such as Georgian fretwork or Victorian show-wood carving. Examining the secondary woods at the back of the piece and the type of finish applied to the mahogany further helps establish the correct decade of manufacture.

Can I hang a heavy antique mirror safely?

Hanging requires assessing the weight of the solid mahogany frame and ensuring the wall fixings match the load, as timber from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries is notably heavy. Professional mirror plates screwed securely into the original side stiles or primary wooden backing provide the necessary support without damaging the antique structure.

How should I care for mahogany frames?

Maintenance involves dusting the timber regularly with a soft, dry cloth and avoiding placement near direct heat sources or strong sunlight that can dry out the wood. Applying a traditional microcrystalline wax occasionally helps nourish the surface patina and protects the polished mahogany without building up a sticky residue.

What is the difference between solid and veneered frames?

Solid frames use single blocks of mahogany throughout the construction, whereas veneered examples apply thin slices of highly figured timber over a stable secondary wood base. Both methods were utilised by period craftsmen, with veneers chosen specifically to display striking grain patterns across flat surfaces like mirror surrounds and table tops.
