What is a linen press?

A linen press is a tall storage cabinet designed specifically to keep flat textiles clean and organised on interior sliding shelves. They usually incorporate a chest of drawers in the lower section for smaller garments. Historically placed in bedrooms or landing corridors, these pieces served as the central storage hub for domestic household linens before modern closets existed.

How do I date an antique wardrobe?

Dating relies on identifying characteristic timber choices, construction joinery, and prevailing stylistic ornament from specific design eras. Georgian pieces favour figured mahogany and subtle inlay, whereas Victorian examples often display heavier proportions and burr walnut veneers. Examining secondary woods inside drawers and the style of brass or iron hardware also provides reliable clues to the exact period of manufacture.

Where should I place an armoire?

These substantial timber pieces require stable environmental conditions away from direct heat sources and strong sunlight to protect natural wood finishes. Bedrooms and large hallways offer ideal placement where their generous internal volume can be fully utilised. Ensuring adequate wall clearance and floor leveling is essential for proper door alignment and smooth operation of internal drawers.
