Continental silver marked as 800 contains eight hundred parts of pure silver per thousand, with the remainder composed of copper or other metals. This standard was widely utilised across Italy for hollowware, boxes, and decorative objects. The slightly lower silver content compared to sterling provided greater durability for functional items like tableware, walking sticks, and large serving dishes without sacrificing the bright appearance of the metal.

How do I identify a Venetian mirror?

Venetian mirrors typically feature engraved glass panels surrounding a central plate, held together by decorative glass rosettes and layered frames. The glass often shows age through foxing and bevelled edges. Many examples utilise a cushion-molded wooden base beneath the mirrored glass sections, reflecting light from multiple angles in grand interior settings.

What are silver giltwood furnishings?

Silver giltwood refers to carved wooden items coated with thin sheets of silver leaf rather than solid metal. This traditional technique was applied to wall lights, console tables, and large armchairs. The underlying wood is prepared with gesso and bole before the silver leaf is laid down, creating a rich texture that catches ambient room light.

How should I care for silver leaf frames?

Silver leaf surfaces require gentle dusting with a soft, dry brush to prevent the accumulation of dirt within carved crevices. Moisture and chemical cleaning agents must be avoided entirely to protect the delicate metallic leaf. Keeping these pieces away from direct sunlight and high humidity will preserve the original gesso and prevent the silver leaf from tarnishing too rapidly.
