How do I choose the right size?

Bed frames range from single and three quarter sizes up to double and king sizes. Measure your bedroom space carefully to accommodate both the mattress dimensions and the outer frame, especially if the design includes projecting brass pillars or decorative side rails. Consider also whether the piece uses standard modern mattress sizes or requires a bespoke mattress to fit older proportions.

Can antique beds support modern mattresses?

Many iron and brass bed frames accommodate standard modern mattress sizes, provided the base has stable wooden slats or a suitable modern slatted platform inserted. Check the inner dimensions of the frame against current sizing standards before purchasing. Some older single frames and non standard widths may require custom mattress ordering to ensure a correct fit within the side rails.

How do I care for painted iron frames?

Maintain painted metal surfaces by dusting regularly with a soft, dry cloth and avoiding abrasive cleaning agents that could damage the original finish. Protect verdigris, black, or cream painted coatings from excessive moisture and direct sunlight. Inspect structural joints and castors periodically to ensure connections remain stable and free from undue stress during everyday use.

Are iron frames easy to assemble?

Most antique metal bed frames use slot in joints or bolt together side rails that dismantle completely for transport and reassembly. Two people can usually assemble these frames by aligning the side rails into the headboard and footboard sockets. Keep the original fixing bolts or source correct period replacements if any hardware has been lost over time.
