What is an antique inlay lamp table used for?

These pieces function as small support surfaces for lighting, reading materials, and decorative objects within domestic interiors. Their compact footprints allow placement beside seating or in corners. Historically, specific variations served as bedside tables, wine stands, or centre tables depending on the room and era. The inclusion of drawers or lower shelves provided storage for small personal items.

How do I distinguish Victorian from Edwardian examples?

Victorian pieces often utilise burr walnut and heavy rosewood with rich, dark finishes and intricate marquetry. These frequently date from the mid to late nineteenth century. Edwardian examples lean towards lighter mahogany and satinwood with Sheraton Revival influences, displaying brighter, more restrained stringing and inlay. Proportions tend to be lighter and airier during this later period.

Are these tables sturdy enough for daily use?

The structural integrity depends on the original joinery and subsequent care, though most occasional tables are built to support moderate weights like lamps and books. Freestanding centre tables offer balanced weight distribution. Delicate inlaid surfaces benefit from coasters and protective mats to prevent moisture rings or scratching on the antique veneer. Regular polishing preserves the timber and the security of the inlay.

What woods were used for the inlay work?

Cabinet makers utilised a wide palette of contrasting timbers including satinwood, mahogany, rosewood, walnut, and various specimen woods. These allowed for tonal gradations within floral and geometric marquetry panels. Chequered inlays often combined boxwood and ebony for sharp contrast around the borders of tabletops and shelves.
