How do I date antique gilt wood?

Dating relies on examining the construction of the wooden frame, the style of the carved ornamentation, and the characteristics of the mirror glass or backing. Eighteenth-century pieces often display hand-carved subtleties and specific regional proportions distinct from later nineteenth-century revivals. Changes in framing techniques and fastener types also provide clues to age. Comparing the joinery and the composition of the gesso layer helps confirm the period of manufacture.

What is mercury glass in mirrors?

Mercury glass refers to mirrors manufactured using a mercury and silver alloy behind the glass plate rather than modern chemical silvering. This process creates a distinctive, dark, cloud-like reflection with scattered speckling. Such glass is commonly found in nineteenth-century French leaner mirrors and earlier pieces. It contributes significantly to the antique character of the reflection.

How should I clean antique gilt wood?

Cleaning requires a soft, dry brush or feather duster to gently remove surface dust from intricate carvings and gesso work. Moisture and modern chemical cleaners damage fragile gold leaf and historical water-gilt surfaces. Professional restoration is recommended if the gilding is flaking or unstable. Regular gentle dusting prevents the accumulation of grime without risking the finish.

Where should I hang an overmantel mirror?

An overmantel mirror is traditionally hung directly above a fireplace mantelpiece, where its scale reflects light and opens up the room. Secure wall fixings suited to the weight of the carved wood frame are essential for safe installation. These large mirrors also function effectively on main reception room walls opposite windows. Their generous proportions amplify natural daylight throughout the space.
