What is an antique gilded cabinet?

An antique gilded cabinet is a decorative furniture piece or display item adorned with gold leaf, gilt, or lacquer. These items include large wooden bookcases alongside smaller display units designed to showcase valued possessions. They reflect historical design movements such as Chinoiserie and Regency Revival, combining utility with fine decorative arts.

How were cabinet plates used?

Cabinet plates were created exclusively for display rather than for serving food at the table. Owners placed them in cabinets or mounted them on walls to highlight fine porcelain painting and gilding. Factories produced these plates with intricate handpainted scenes to demonstrate technical skill.

How do I care for gilded furniture?

Gilded furniture requires gentle dusting with a soft, dry cloth to protect the delicate gold leaf surface from abrasion. Avoid chemical cleaners and moisture, which can lift the gilt or damage the underlying wood and lacquer. Keep pieces away from direct sunlight and excessive humidity to preserve the finish.

How do I identify porcelain periods?

Porcelain periods are identified through maker marks, factory stamps, and stylistic cues unique to specific decades. Handpainted signatures and pattern numbers often narrow down the production date. Examining the paste, glaze type, and colour palette provides further clues to the manufacturing era.
