Where should an antique couch go?

These seating pieces suit drawing rooms, studies, and spacious bedrooms where their proportions can be fully appreciated. Their varied designs allow them to anchor a traditional scheme or provide a striking contrast in a contemporary interior. Consider the traffic flow around longer pieces like chaise longues and daybeds. Placing them away from direct sunlight helps preserve delicate fabrics and leather finishes.

How do I care for leather upholstery?

Leather surfaces benefit from regular dusting with a soft, dry cloth to prevent dirt accumulation. Applying a suitable leather conditioner periodically maintains suppleness and prevents drying. Keep antique leather seating away from heat sources and radiators to avoid cracking. Professional cleaning is recommended for deep restoration or stubborn marks.

Can I use an antique couch daily?

Many of these pieces were built for robust daily use, particularly sturdy Victorian Chesterfords and solid timber settees. Checking the internal springing and frame stability ensures the piece supports regular sitting. Lighter frames, such as gilded Regency or intricate cane-work designs, require a more gentle approach. Routine inspection of the joints helps maintain structural integrity over time.
