What is a carver armchair?

A carver armchair is a seated piece featuring structural arm supports designed to match standard dining chairs. These items were traditionally placed at the heads of dining tables or utilised in studies. They combine the comfortable support of an armchair with the formal height required for dining or desk work. The form appears across various historical periods in both formal mahogany and rustic timber.

How do I identify a Windsor chair?

Windsor chairs feature a solid wooden seat carved with a slight saddle depression into which the legs and back spindles are secured. They rely on vernacular construction methods rather than formal cabinet making. Most examples utilise native woods like elm and ash, often incorporating bentwood bows and high stick-back profiles. They represent a distinct departure from formal mahogany dining furniture.

Where should I place an antique armchair?

These armchairs suit placement at the ends of dining tables, beside desks as library seats, or as occasional chairs in morning rooms. Their supportive side rests provide functional comfort for reading and writing. Matching pairs work well flanking a fireplace or chest of drawers, while single pieces add historical character to hallways and bedrooms.

How do I date an antique armchair?

Dating relies on observing the timber species, construction techniques, hardware, and stylistic indicators such as shield backs or carved scroll arms. Georgian and Regency pieces display refined urban cabinet making, whereas Victorian and Edwardian examples often feature revival motifs. Examining the underside of the seat and the joinery methods provides further clues regarding the manufacturing period.
