How do you open a tantalus?

Most tantalus frames operate with a small key that releases the top metal bar, allowing the handle to swing back and the decanters to be lifted out. Without the key, the stoppers remain firmly locked in the wooden framework. Keep in mind that older locks can be delicate. Turn the key gently without forcing the mechanism to avoid damaging the original brass components.

What is the difference between a coaster and a cooler?

A bottle coaster is a shallow base designed to hold a single wine bottle upright while protecting the table surface from condensation or drips. They are frequently fitted with wooden bases and felt lining. A cooler or magnum bucket is deeper, designed to hold ice and water alongside the bottle to chill champagne or white wine during a meal.

How do I clean silver-plated bottle holders?

Use a soft cloth and a gentle silver polish formulated specifically for plated items. Avoid harsh scrubbing that can wear through the thin silver layer to the base metal beneath. Ensure wooden bases or leather inserts remain dry during cleaning to prevent warping or staining the historic materials.

Can I use modern bottles in antique holders?

Standard wine bottles generally fit well into Victorian and Edwardian coasters, but modern champagne bottles or unusually shaped spirits bottles may vary in diameter. It is best to check the interior measurements of the holder against your preferred bottles. Tantalus frames are built to hold their specific accompanying decanters, so substituting mismatched bottles often fails due to differing glass dimensions.
