How do I identify genuine oak panels?

Examine the board for natural medullary rays, often called silver grain, which indicate quarter-sawn oak. Tool marks left by adzes or hand saws confirm older manual preparation. Check that individual panels move slightly within their surrounding frames. Fixed or glued panels usually indicate modern replacement work.

Where were these coffers used originally?

These storage chests sat primarily in the principal chambers and halls of substantial houses. They held valuable textiles, household linen, and family documents. Their heavy construction also allowed them to serve as seating or tables when space was limited.

How do I care for antique wood panels?

Keep wooden pieces away from direct heat sources and sudden temperature fluctuations. Stable indoor humidity prevents the timber from splitting. Apply a traditional beeswax polish sparingly to nourish the dry surface. Avoid modern silicone-based sprays.

What is the difference between joined and boarded construction?

Joined furniture uses frame-and-panel construction where a grooved frame holds a floating centre board. This method provides structural strength without cracking. Boarded construction nails plain planks together directly, which is typical of simpler or earlier utilitarian boxes.
