This Japanese Meiji period cloisonne enamel dish dates to circa 1880. The circular decorative plate is formed from copper and brass with a bright turquoise, golden yellow, brown, light grey-blue, black and white enamel finish. The surface displays a detailed depiction of a tiger stalking through mountain foothills against a light grey-blue sky, surrounded by bamboo stems, grey rockwork and a stylized floral border along the brass-rimmed edge. Fine wirework outlines the fur, stripes and mountain terrain, with faint hairlines visible across the enamel surface. The piece measures 20 cm high, 20 cm wide and 1.5 cm deep. Placement suits a gentleman's library or study interior, where the dish functions as a striking decorative charger. It sits well displayed upright upon a mantelpiece or a dedicated plate stand as a focal point within a room. The auspicious tiger motif brings traditional East Asian cultural symbolism into domestic spaces, adding visual interest to traditional or eclectic tabletop displays.

Meiji period cloisonne enamel refers to decorative metalwork produced in Japan between 1868 and 1912, characterised by delicate wirework and vitreous enamel pastes fired onto copper or bronze bodies.

Artisans soldered thin copper or brass wires, known as cloisons, onto a metal dish to form delicate outlines. These cells were subsequently filled with coloured glass enamel pastes and fired repeatedly before final polishing.

Authentic pieces typically feature extremely fine wirework, complex naturalistic motifs such as tigers or flora, gilt-finished copper rims, and a heavy weight relative to their size.

Position the dish vertically on a wooden or brass plate stand atop a sideboard, mantelpiece, or bookshelf to showcase the detailed artwork and rich enamel colour accents.

Dust gently with a soft dry microfiber cloth. Avoid immersion in water, abrasive polishes, or chemical cleaners, as these can strip gilded rims or damage vulnerable exposed metal wire edges.
