This Japanese Totai Shippo sake teapot dates from the Meiji period around 1890. The piece is rendered in the body cloisonné technique on a porcelain base, finished with a textured brown tree-bark surface and decorated with a green and orange cloisonné enamel dragon winding around the body. It has a curved textured spout, an arched handle, and stands on a pedestal base above a circular foot, with an open top and a missing lid. The teapot measures 13 cm high, 15 cm wide, and 10 cm deep. It makes a striking display item for a gentleman's library, sitting upon a sideboard top as a decorative accent in a traditional or eclectic interior.

Totai Shippo is a specialized Japanese decorative technique developed during the late nineteenth century, characterized by applying vitreous enamel decoration over porcelain or earthenware, frequently featuring a textured tree-bark imitation background.

Artisans craft a ceramic core, apply a textured glaze to simulate natural tree bark, and affix metal wires directly onto the ceramic surface before filling the compartments with coloured enamel pastes and firing the piece.

Authentic pieces from this period display complex wire work, detailed hand-enamelled pictorial motifs, makers marks or seals near the foot, and natural signs of age on unglazed ceramic surfaces.

Display the vessel as a singular accent piece on a console table, dark wood sideboard, or within a glass display cabinet alongside minimalist ceramic and stone decor.

Dust gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth, avoiding liquid solvents, full water immersion, and abrasive cleaners that could damage the delicate enamel cells or textured ground.
