The Victorian Pleasure Pier on the South Coast Boscombe, Bournemouth Dorset Topographical English Oil on Board

Description

A topographical painting with lovely detail and great charm. It depicts a Victorian pier on the South Coast, with a still relatively rugged landscape in the foreground. The Victorians wanted to demonstrate engineering prowess and their ability to master the force of the sea.: the considerable length of the pier is demonstrated by the artist by the addition of a ship in its vicinity.

Painted in oils on artists board supplied by AJ Cheshire, 18, Royal Arcade, Boscombe (back then in Hampshire, today in Dorset), the painting most likely depicts the 600 foot Boscombe Pier, designed by Archibald Smith and opened on 28th July 1889. As our work of art dates from circa 1890, the landmark would have been brand new.

The painting measures 22.5 x 27.5 cm and is unsigned. The overall framed size is 32 x 44 cm.
