Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Italian giltwood mirrors from the 19th century typically feature hand-carved wooden frames decorated with gold leaf using traditional water gilding techniques. Design elements frequently draw inspiration from earlier Rococo and Baroque periods, incorporating scrolling acanthus leaves, asymmetrical curves, and elaborate crestings.

These mirrors were constructed using carved softwood or hardwood frames coated with gesso, followed by bole clay and gold leaf gilding. The mirror plates were created using silvered or mercury glass, which naturally ages over time to produce characteristic specks and dark spots known as foxing.

Authentic period pieces exhibit subtle hand-carving marks on the rear timber frame and signs of natural oxidisation or wear to the gold leaf finish where red or grey bole clay shows through. The mirror glass often demonstrates slight distortion and dark foxing typical of historical silvering processes.

A mid-sized giltwood mirror functions effectively as a focal point when placed above a fireplace mantelpiece, dining room sideboard, or hallway console table. Pairing elaborate carved gold frames with clean-lined contemporary furniture creates a balanced, layered interior aesthetic.

Dust the gilded frame gently using a soft, dry microfibre cloth or natural bristle brush, avoiding any water, liquid cleansers, or chemical polishes which can dissolve historic gesso and gold leaf. Spray glass cleaner directly onto a separate cloth rather than the mirror face to prevent liquid from seeping into the frame rebate.
