Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

19th-century English overmantel mirrors were designed specifically to sit atop architectural fireplace mantels. They typically feature an arched upper rim, flat bottom edge, and moulded plaster or wooden frames finished with gold leaf.

These mirrors were constructed using pine or oak wooden backings overlaid with carved wood or composition plaster detail. The frame was then primed with gesso, coated with clay bole, and finished using water gilding or oil gilding with thin gold leaf.

Authentic period pieces show signs of age such as minor foxing or oxidisation on the mercury or silver mirror glass, natural wear revealing the red or grey bole beneath the gold leaf, and hand-carved or plaster construction on the reverse.

Positioning a gilt mirror above a contemporary fireplace or a minimalist sideboard creates a high-contrast focal point. The reflective surface introduces depth and natural illumination into neutral or modern room schemes.

Giltwood frames should be dusted gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush to avoid flaking delicate gold leaf. Water and solvent cleaners must be avoided entirely, as moisture breaks down underlying gesso and adhesive layers.
