Arts and Crafts Oak Book Case or Shelves

1900 - 1920
Description

An arts and crafts oak book case or shelf of compact size, dating from the early 20th century, with tapered sides and a striking circular cutout detail to the frame.

This little shelf cabinet is beautifully designed and while simple is very striking. Initially I thought it might be of Scottish origin, just because the style seems to me to have similarities to some of the Glasgow School arts and crafts furniture, but having done a bit of research I am now wondering whether it is actually American and made by ‘The Lakeside Craft Shops’ of Sheboygan, Wisconsin c1912. Their furniture seems to be quite rare, but there are a few photos online of similarly shaped bookcases/shelves, which have similar round-headed fixings through the side frame to the shelves. I can’t find another example of this design anywhere though, and there is no mark or label on the piece, so I can’t say for sure if this is correct.

I’m not sure if this was actually designed as a book case, as the spacings between the lower shelves are a bit too small for books, so it was perhaps intended as a general shelf cabinet.

Condition: The condition is good with some minor surface wear, marks and scratches in accordance with age, which can be seen in the photos.
