Sunset Landscape - 19th Century Watercolour by Arthur Willett R.A.

19th century
Description

Here is a pretty Victorian watercolour of farm workers returning home along the river after a days harvesting, with horses drawing carts laden with hay, and the red hue of the sun setting over the hills in the distance. Signed by the artist in the lower left corner of the picture.

The painting is by Arthur Willett (1857 - 1918) , who exhibited extensively, most notably at the Royal Academy seven times over six seasons, The Royal Academy of Artists in Birmingham, The Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool, The Royal Society of British Artists, The Royal Hibernian Academy, Dublin and the Royal Scottish Academy to name but a few.

The picture is presented in a pale gilt metal frame, with an ivory mount.

Of particular interest are the inscriptions on the reverse, the painting having been gifted by Arthur Basil Cottle an author and medievalist of fine repute to MJ Crossley Evans a great scholar and collector of antiquities - both men were known as supreme raconteurs! There is also a short resume of the artists career and exhibitions.

The painting is bright and unfaded and in good condition, the image measuring 29cm by 14cm, and 42cm by 26.5cm framed.

Please do not hesitate to get in touch if I can provide any further information or photographs.

I offer free delivery to mainland UK, and am very happy to organise quotes for shipping abroad.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Nineteenth-century British watercolour landscapes typically feature soft washes, naturalistic lighting, and pastoral subjects reflecting the Romantic movements interest in nature and atmospheric conditions.

Artists used water-soluble pigments bound with gum arabic, applied directly to handmade rag paper, and often preserved behind glass within wooden or gilded frames.

Authentic pieces often exhibit age-appropriate paper toning, fine brushwork techniques, period mounting materials, and signatures or monograms consistent with established artists of the period.

A traditional watercolour can be hung above a console table, integrated into a gallery wall, or paired with contemporary furniture to add historical depth and texture to a living space.

Watercolours should be framed using acid-free mounting boards and UV-protective glass, stored away from direct sunlight, and maintained in stable humidity levels to prevent fading and foxing.
