Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Mid-nineteenth-century French gilt bronze, also known as ormolu, features cast bronze coated in gold via a mercury gilding process. Objects from this era often display elaborate Rococo Revival or Second Empire decorative motifs, such as scrollwork, acanthus leaves, and classical moulding.

Foundries cast bronze using lost-wax or sand-casting techniques before hand-chasing the surface to refine details. A mixture of gold and mercury was applied and heated to evaporate the mercury, leaving a durable layer of gold adhering to the metal surface.

Makers from this period often impressed a signature stamp or foundry mark onto the underside of the base or internal casting components. Authentic pieces also demonstrate crisp hand-chasing, heavy weight consistent with cast bronze, and natural rubbing wear to the gilding on raised areas.

Positioning a pair of gilded candlesticks on a marble mantelpiece, sideboard top, or central dining table creates a focused anchor point. Combining metallic accents with matte surfaces or dark timber provides contrast within modern room arrangements.

Dusting regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth or soft brush prevents build-up in detailed casting. Harsh chemical polishes, abrasive pads, and liquid cleaners must be avoided, as they can strip or damage the delicate gilt layer.
