Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Louis XVI style candlesticks are inspired by neoclassical design principles, featuring straight geometric lines, fluted columns, and classical motifs such as acanthus leaves, rosette detail, rope twisting, and beaded borders. Originating in late 18th-century France, this style rejected Rococo asymmetry in favour of classical Greek and Roman architectural symmetry.

Pieces from this era and style were typically cast in heavy bronze or brass, which was subsequently chased by hand to define sharp relief details. The metal was then finished using fire-gilding (ormolu) or cold gilding techniques to produce an enduring, lustrous gold surface.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit substantial weight, fine hand-chased surface details, and evidence of cast construction in multiple threaded components. Look for signs of age such as natural oxidisation in deep crevices, historic wax residue inside the candle sockets, and slight wear to the gilding on high points.

These decorative objects work exceptionally well as symmetrical accents on a fireplace mantelpiece, sideboard, or formal dining table. Arranging them against neutral wall tones or minimalist backgrounds allows the intricate classical detailing and warm gilded finish to serve as a focal anchor.

Dust regularly with a soft, lint-free cloth or a dry soft-bristled brush to clean intricate detailing. Avoid using abrasive metal polishes, harsh chemical cleaners, or water on gilded surfaces, as these treatments can wear away or damage the delicate gilt layer.
