19th century
For Sale by Its About Time
Description

An enormous 18 inch dial regulator wall clock in excellent condition. With a sweeping second hand, large roman numerals and outer minutes around the dial, this clock is particularly rare. It is signed Gillett & Johnston of Croydon, a known maker and bell foundry, established in 1844. Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A drop dial wall clock is a type of pendulum-driven timepiece featuring a circular dial face set above an extending lower wooden trunk enclosure that houses the pendulum.

These timepieces were typically constructed using solid or veneered mahogany cases, brass movement mechanisms, and painted iron or enamelled dials protected by a glass lens.

Authentic examples feature hand-painted numerals, cast brass bezels, hand-cut gear trains, and often bear the makers signature and location inscribed directly onto the dial face.

Positioning a mahogany wall clock as a central visual feature above a console table or in an entryway provides balance against neutral, contemporary paint schemes.

Position the clock away from direct sunlight and heat sources to preserve the wood, clean the dial glass with a dry microfibre cloth, and arrange professional servicing for the movement every few years.
