Trunk Dial Wall Clock by Sansom 1850

19th century
For Sale by Its About Time
Description

Charles Sansom of London is recorded working in London for the known dates of 1863-1881, this clock would likely pre-date that at around 1840-50. This is not uncommon as recorded dates were compiled from available records of the period. The clock is typical London high quality throughout with substantial fusee movement and very well crafted case with brass inlays into well figured Mahogany and attractive convex dial, original hands and lower convex door with lock and key. The dial is 12" diameter and has bold Roman numerals. The rear of the dial is very interesting as it shows the makers name Sansom and many historical repairs at varying dates but importantly it shows old script at the time of the clocks creation which we have photographed (see attached images).... "Ordinary figs, No name, Sansom". We have never seen this before on the rear of a dial!

The glass over the dial is of course convex and the bezel is thick cast brass. The dial has the odd mark here and there but is original and we feel it best left as is but can be discussed .

A wonderful and elegant clock/timepiece.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A trunk dial clock, also known as a drop dial clock, is a 19th-century wall-mounted timepiece featuring a round dial face supported by a slim rectangular wooden casing or trunk designed to accommodate the swing of a longer pendulum.

Clocks from this era typically feature cases made of flame mahogany, walnut, or oak, often decorated with brass stringing or marquetry inlay, alongside hand-painted cream enamel dials and cast brass bezels.

Authentic pieces generally display heavy hand-cut brass mechanical movements, hand-painted Roman numeral dials with subtle age-related crazing, cast brass bezel surrounds, and original wooden side doors or bottom access hatches.

Position the clock as a focal point above a sideboard or entry console, balancing its rich timber tone against neutral painted walls or contemporary monochrome artwork to create visual contrast.

Keep the casing away from direct heat sources and high humidity to prevent timber warping, dust the wooden surface with a soft microfibre cloth, apply natural beeswax sparingly once a year, and have the mechanical movement serviced by a professional horologist every five to seven years.
