French Repeating Carriage Clock Movement Fully Restored

19th century
For Sale by Arundel Clocks
Description

Hi

I have for sale a French striking and repeating carriage clock made in France around 1870;s simply stunning brass plain masked dial with raised numerals striking on a gong has been fully restored with new springs and all screws and the gong is re-blued in stunning condition.

This is one large heavy clock built to top spec and a must for the best of collections a very rare case not often seen for sale, with the solid handle also.

The Case

The case is in solid shiny gilt and stands 19cm high x 10cm wide with a depth of 9cm it is in perfect condition with mint thick 3mm beveled sides/front/ and top viewing glass.

The case is very shiny and hard to photograph they do not do the clock justice at all.

The Dial

The dial is in original condition in white porcelain numerals, the dial is set in a stunning gilded plain mask which sets this clock apart from others, the clock has very fine original black ornate hands,

with the bold but fine Arabic numerals.

The Movement

The movement is an eight-day time and strike which strikes the hours via a small sweet gong to the rear and also has the repeater button on top to repeat the last hour strike, the movement has been serviced and oiled so keeping a great time over the eight days and has the bonus of the original silvered platform escapement.

The movement has been fully serviced and is running very strong.

The movement contains Geneva stop work to save over winding only found on the best of the best.

Overall a very beautiful quality carriage clock by a top quality French maker that looks stunning on display and contains all of its original features this is quite a rare find these days.

I will ship worldwide and pack very carefully.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Developed in early 19th-century France, a carriage clock is a small spring-driven portable timepiece originally designed for travel. Repeating carriage clocks feature a mechanical push-button mechanism that sounds the hour or quarter-hour on demand.

Traditional carriage clocks are constructed with solid brass cases, bevelled glass side panels, steel horological components, and enamel or brass dials, occasionally featuring gilded pierced faceplates.

Authentic period carriage clocks typically possess heavy brass plates, balance-wheel escapements visible through top glass panels, hand-cut steel components, and French maker marks stamped into the rear movement movement plates.

Display the clock on a mantelpiece, sideboard top, or executive office desk where its geometric brass structure can contrast against contemporary backdrops while serving as a focal functional accent.

Keep the casing clean using a dry microfibre cloth to avoid removing delicate lacquer or oxidisation finishes, and ensure the mechanical movement receives professional horological cleaning and lubrication every five to seven years.
