Sheffield plate was invented in the 18th century as a process of fusing a layer of sterling silver over a core of copper. This technique allowed craftsmen to create metalwork that visually mimicked solid silver while offering greater structural strength at a lower cost.

These items were manufactured by fusing sheets of silver to a central copper ingot before rolling and shaping the metal. Ornate embellishments on Victorian examples were frequently cast in lead or silver alloy and soldered onto the silver-plated body.
