A Fine Pair of Old Sheffield Plated Chamber Candlesticks

Description

This beautiful pair of Old Sheffield Plated chamber candlesticks date to c1820. Marked to the interior with a workman's mark and featuring removable sconces and snuffers. Wonderfully detailed to the borders and of a superb heavy quality.

The condition is very good overall with only a small amount of copper bleed to the raised edges. Slightly more copper bleed to the undersides.

Invented in the mid-eighteenth century, Old Sheffield Plate fused sterling silver onto copper ingots to produce durable silver-plated tableware and lighting. Chamber candlesticks, also known as chambersticks, were short, portable candle holders crafted with wide dished bases and handles for carrying candle light between rooms.

These items were manufactured by fusing silver sheets to copper before rolling the metal flat. Decorative components such as gadrooned borders, candle nozzles, finger handles, and conical snuffers were individually stamped or cast and subsequently attached using soft solder.

Authentic Old Sheffield Plate displays a warm silver colour and often exhibits copper bleeding where the silver surface has worn over time on raised areas. Look for turned-over silver wire edges on the rim, hand-soldered joints, and an absence of modern electroplating purity marks.

Position a pair of silver chambersticks symmetrically on a mantelpiece, side table, or bedside unit to add metallic highlight and classical symmetry. Pairing them with tall white tapered candles provides decorative contrast against dark timber or painted walls.

Clean gently using a soft microfibre cloth and a mild silver polish created for plated antiques. Avoid abrasive cleaners, chemical dips, and heavy rubbing, as these can strip the thin layer of sterling silver from the copper substrate.
