Old Sheffield Plate was discovered in 1742 by Thomas Boulsover, who developed a process of fusing a layer of sterling silver over copper ingots. This method allowed craftsmen to produce silverware and lighting accessories that resembled solid silver at a fraction of the cost, remaining the dominant plating technique until electroplating emerged in the 1840s.

These pieces were crafted from a composite sheet consisting of sterling silver fused onto a core of copper. To hide the exposed copper edges, maker techniques evolved to apply inset silver wires, silver foil, or struck silver borders around rims, nozzles, and bases.

Authentic pieces often show slight copper show-through, known as bleeding, where frequent polishing has worn the silver layer thin. They typically lack standard silver hallmarks, though some bear maker struck stamps, and feature visible seams or hand-punched construction underneath the bases.

Silver candlesticks can be arranged as a dining table centrepiece or placed symmetrically on a sideboard or mantelpiece. Their reflective surface balances contemporary textures like linen, polished concrete, or dark timber.

Clean gently using a soft cloth and a non-abrasive silver polish formulated for plated metals to prevent wearing down the thin silver layer. Avoid harsh dipping chemicals, wash wax residue away with warm water, and store in low-humidity environments to minimise tarnish.
