We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Old Sheffield Plate is a historic metalworking process invented in the 1740s where a sheet of sterling silver was fused onto a copper ingot before being rolled into thin sheets. This technique allowed manufacturers to produce durable silverware at a lower price point than solid sterling silver until the electroplating method replaced it in the 1840s.

Georgian period candlesticks were predominantly manufactured using cast sterling silver, Old Sheffield Plate (silver fused to copper), brass, or cast iron. Sheffield plate items often incorporated lead-filled bases or cast silver mounts to reinforce rims and borders.

Authentic pieces generally display evidence of copper showing through worn areas, known as copper bleed, particularly on high-friction points. Furthermore, they often feature visible seams, exposed copper edge wires rolled with silver foil, and lack modern electroplating marks.

Antique silver and copper candlesticks offer rich visual contrast when paired with contemporary stone surfaces, rustic wooden dining tables, or minimalist plaster mantelpieces. Arranging them as a symmetric pair or combining them with mixed-metal accents creates a balanced, layered room design.

Clean Sheffield plate gently using a soft cloth and non-abrasive silver polish specially formulated for antique silver. Avoid harsh dipping chemical solutions or aggressive rubbing, as excessive force can wear down the delicate silver layer and accelerate copper exposure.
