Emerging in France during the mid-to-late nineteenth century, Napoleon III style mirrors feature revivalist influences combining Classical, Renaissance, and Baroque decorative elements with ornate water-gilded frames.

Due to historical limitations in manufacturing large single sheets of glass, frame makers fitted two separate mirror plates joined horizontally, set within a wood and gesso structure gilded with gold leaf.

Authentic pieces feature hand-carved wood under gesso, visible red or grey bole beneath distressed gilding, mercury or silvered split glass plates, and original pine or oak backing boards.

Position the mirror above a mantelpiece or console table to establish a focal point, drawing natural light across the room while contrasting period detailing against contemporary architecture.

Dust the frame lightly using a dry, soft camel-hair brush, avoiding water, damp cloths, or chemical cleaners which dissolve delicate gesso and lift gold leaf.
