Georgian dining tables, crafted between 1714 and 1830, are characterised by classical proportions, turned or cabriole legs, and high-quality hardwoods such as Cuban mahogany. Many featured drop-leaf or modular designs to adapt to formal dining requirements.

Plum pudding mahogany refers to mahogany timber exhibiting a distinct natural figure with dark, rounded mottling resembling the fruit in a traditional pudding. This grain effect was highly prized in 18th and 19th-century cabinetmaking for decorative surfaces.

Authentic Georgian tables typically feature hand-cut joinery, original brass castors or fittings, and secondary timber like pine or oak for substructures. Natural shrinkage marks and hand-planed underside surfaces are common indicators of period construction.

Pair dark mahogany tables with contemporary upholstered seating to create balanced visual contrast. Position the deep wood tones against neutral walls, light wool rugs, and understated tableware to highlight the timber grain.

Preserve mahogany surfaces by dusting regularly with a soft cloth and applying beeswax polish once or twice a year in the direction of the grain. Keep the table away from direct sunlight, radiator heat, and sudden humidity changes to prevent timber warping.
