Antique French Rococo Ormolu Clock - Cupid

1900 - 1920
Description

~ French - Circa 1900 ~

~~ Excellent condition, fully overhauled ~~

A stunning original antique French Rococo clock. The case made of finely gilded bronze in the Louis XV style of bold scrolling acanthus forming a waisted case, standing upon a base. Fabric fretted panels lighten the design. Cupid is depicted as a cherub, seated to the top with torch and quiver of arrows, offering a posy of flowers.

The dial porcelain enamel on copper with finely fretted gilt brass hands. The rear door is also glazed to allow the movement to be seen and the clock is decorated in the round allowing you to display on a table or in front of a mirror. The bottom of the pendulum can be glimpsed gently swinging within the case.

The French movement is of high quality and is by A. D. Mougin. It is in excellent clean and running condition having been fully overhauled by our clockmaker. Pendulum is an old replacement. It runs for 8 days and strikes the hours and halves on a bell. We have a video of the clock running, please ask and we will send you a link.

Condition of the case is excellent, the original gilding is beautifully clean and bright with hardly any wear or discolouration. The dial is also very good, a very small nibble to the left hand winding hole. We have replaced the fabric with fresh.

A. D. Mougin clockmaker's mark on the movement backplate

Complete with pendulum, bell and a suitable key. Full setting up instructions supplied if required.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

French Rococo ormolu clocks are defined by asymmetrical C-scrolls, acanthus leaf ornamentation, rocaille motifs, and figurative elements such as cherubs or cupids, typical of 18th and 19th-century French decorative arts.

These timepieces were crafted using mercury-gilded cast bronze for the outer case, paired with white enamel dials, hand-painted numerals, and brass mechanical movements.

Authentic pieces exhibit heavy cast bronze bases with hand-chased detailing, natural age-related wear to the gilded surface, dual winding arbours on the dial, and period mechanical marks on the backplate.

Position the clock centrally on a marble mantelpiece, dark wood sideboard, or console table, pairing it with understated surrounding accessories to emphasize its metallic detailing.

Dust the case gently with a soft dry brush or microfibre cloth, avoiding water, harsh chemical solvents, or abrasive metal polishes that can strip original gilding.
