Antique French Gilt Bronze Drum Head Clock

19th century
Description

~ French - Circa 1880 ~

~~ Excellent condition, fully overhauled ~~

A large and elegant Louis XVI neoclassical style drum head clock, beautifully made in gilt bronze. The dial is within a drum case supported upon a reeded column flanked with scroll supports and adorned with an acanthus swag. Above, a large gadrooned urn rises with a pineapple finial, completing the composition with a sense of refined grandeur and balance.

The large gilt-bronze dial is mounted with twelve enamel cartouches and retains its original, finely fretted blued steel hands. The front bezel is fitted with convex glass, while the rear bezel is similarly glazed, allowing a view of the movement within.

The French movement is of excellent quality and remains in clean, fine running order, having been fully overhauled by our clockmaker. The pendulum is an old replacement. The clock runs for eight days and strikes the hours and half-hours on a bell. We have a video of the clock, please ask and we will send you a link.

The case is in excellent condition, with the original gilding remaining beautifully clean and bright, with some slight wear and discolouration. The dial is likewise excellent condition with no damage. The rear glass displays only some light surface scratches.

Complete with pendulum, bell and a suitable key. Full setting up instructions supplied if required.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A drum head mantel clock features a circular movement casing resembling a drum, elevated on decorative supports or a plinth base. This style originated in 18th-century France and became a staple of Neoclassical and Louis XVI decorative arts.

These clocks are constructed primarily from cast bronze finished with mercury gilding, known as ormolu. The clock dials often feature white enamel cartouche plaques or chased brass plates behind a protective glass bezel.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-chased surface detail, heavy cast bronze construction, and mercury-gilded surfaces with subtle wear to high points. Clock movements usually bear French maker stamps, serial numbers, or countwheel striking mechanisms.

Position the clock as a focal piece on a marble fireplace mantelpiece, sideboard, or console table. Pairing gilt metalwork with understated modern backdrop colours, such as charcoal or muted off-white, highlights the metalwork detail without visual clutter.

Dust gently using a dry, soft-bristled brush to remove accumulation from chased details. Avoid liquid polishes, abrasive cleaners, or water, as these can strip the original gilding and cause oxidisation to the underlying bronze.
