Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Nineteenth-century gilt mirrors typically feature frames crafted from carved wood or moulded composition decorated with thin layers of gold leaf. Influenced by Rococo Revival and Victorian aesthetics, these pieces often incorporate scrolling foliage, acanthus leaves, and textured background hatching.

Artisans carved wooden base frames and frequently applied gesso and moulded plaster details before applying water or oil gilding. The reflective mirror glass was set into the frame recess, secured at the back by wooden pine backboards.

Authentic period gilding displays natural surface wear, micro-cracking known as craquelure in the gesso layer, and subtle variation in sheen where the red or grey clay bole underlayer shows through.

Designers frequently position an ornate gilt mirror above a minimalist mantelpiece or modern sideboard to create textural contrast between traditional ornamentation and clean contemporary architectural lines.

Frame surfaces should be dusted lightly with a soft, dry brush, avoiding water or chemical cleaners that can dissolve historic gesso or gilding layers. Glass cleaner should be applied to a cloth rather than sprayed directly to prevent liquid seeping behind the frame moulding.
