This colourful PAIR OF VICTORIAN IMARI VASES and COVERS date from circa 1880.

The decoration is well detailed and the VASES display beautifully.

They are in good condition with no restoration. There is a chip to the edge of the rim of one cover and a small under glaze chip to the other which has happened during the making.

Imari porcelain originated in the Arita region of Japan in the seventeenth century and is named after the port from which it was exported to Europe. The style gained widespread European popularity, leading nineteenth-century British and Continental potteries to produce their own adaptations featuring signature cobalt blue and rust-red colour schemes.

These pieces were crafted from hard-paste or soft-paste porcelain, painted with underglaze cobalt blue, fired, and then decorated with overglaze iron-red enamel and gilding before undergoing a second, lower-temperature firing.

Authentic period pieces display hand-painted variations in the line work, unglazed foot rims showing slight wear, dark blue underglaze tones, and visible brushwork within the iron-red enamels and gilt highlights.
