Imari porcelain refers to Japanese porcelain wares made in the Arita area and historically exported through the port of Imari. The style is characterised by a distinct colour palette combining underglaze cobalt blue with overglaze iron-red enamels and gilt highlights.

Imari pieces are crafted from high-fired porcelain kaolin clay. Patterns are painted in cobalt blue before glazing and firing, after which iron-red enamel and gold leaf detailing are applied over the glaze before a second firing.
