Description

A rare, small, 8 day, longcase clock by Smith of Chester.

The movement and dial are unusual for a clock of this period, and appear to be peculiar to Smith. The dial is late in style by only being of 10”, a round calendar box, ‘fleur de lys’ half hour markers and count-wheel striking are all also earlier features, and yet the one piece seconds chapter plate helps date the clock to between 1730-40. The movement is further unusual in being only ¾ size although easily producing 8 days duration. Original blued steel hands.

The case is of oak with walnut cross-banding to the trunk and hood doors. Standing at only 77 ½” high it is of lovely, neat proportions that will fit into any cottage.

Joseph Smith is listed as working in Gloverstone, Chester until after 1769.
