Brass Dial Longcase Clock by Thomas Baker of Malling.

This beautifully proportioned, small honey oak longcase clock is of 8-day duration with a high quality 5 pillar movement, anchor escapement and striking the hours on a bell via the rack and snail striking system.

The 12" break arch brass dial with a very well mated centre, a silvered and engraved seconds subsidiary dial and calendar aperture with original finely blued steel hands, a silvered chapter ring and makers cartouche signed Baker, Malling (Kent) in the break arch.

Serviced and guaranteed for 3 years.

Georgian longcase clocks, developed during the 18th century, are free-standing weight-driven timepieces housed in wooden tall cases. They feature square or arched metal dials with cast brass corner spandrels and engraved silvered chapter rings indicating hours and minutes.

Cases were predominantly built using solid oak, mahogany, or walnut, sometimes enhanced with marquetry or lacquer work. Dials were composed of sheet brass, cast brass decorative mounts, silvered brass rings, and hand-forged iron or steel clockwork components.

Authentic period examples display hand-hammered iron hands, cast brass spandrels held by screws from behind the dial plate, hand-engraved maker names, and evidence of hand-cut teeth on the internal clock wheels rather than modern machine stamping.

In modern interiors, longcase clocks are positioned as focal vertical elements in entrance halls, stair landings, or formal living rooms. Their tall wooden cases complement both period architectural details and minimalist modern backdrops.

The wooden case requires regular application of natural beeswax polish and shielding from direct sunlight or central heating sources. The mechanical movement requires professional lubrication by a horologist every three to five years to prevent wear on brass bushings.
