Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Cast iron doorstops, also known as door porters, gained widespread popularity during the nineteenth century in Britain. Foundries produced heavy decorative weights depicting folklore figures, animals, and popular theatrical characters like Mr Punch to hold open heavy timber doors.

These items were produced using sand-casting methods, where molten iron was poured into sand moulds crafted from carved wooden master patterns. After cooling, the rough castings were hand-finished and painted in bright polychrome enamels.

Authentic nineteenth-century pieces feature subtle casting seams, slight surface irregularities, and heavy weight relative to their size. Original painted examples display natural surface wear, oxidisation, and layered paint loss rather than artificial distress.

A cast iron door porter functions effectively positioned at the base of an interior doorway or placed on a fireplace hearth. It also serves as a sculptural accent piece when displayed on low open shelving or beside a front entry.

Clean the surface gently using a soft, dry brush to remove dust without flaking remaining paint. Avoid using water, detergents, or abrasive polishes, as moisture can accelerate rust formation on bare iron sections.
