4 of Richard Whately's Books Dated between 1832-1841

Description

Richard Whately (1787-1863) was an English academic, rhetorician, logician, philosopher, economist and theologian who also served as Arch Bishop of Dublin for the Church of Ireland. He was a prolific and combative author over a wide range of topics, a flamboyant character and one of the first reviewers to recognise the talents of Jane Austen.

A uniformly bound selection of four of Whately's works, in various editions, published by B Fellowes of London, as follows:-

Introductory Lectures on Political Economy, second edition, published 1832.

Essays (Second Series) on some of the difficulties in the writings of the Apostle Paul, fourth edition, revised, published 1837.

Elements of Logic comprising the substance of the article in the Encyclopaedia Metropolitana, seventh edition, revised, published 1840.

Elements of Rhetoric; Comprising an analysis of the Laws of moral evidence and of persuasion with rules for argumentative composition and elocution, sixth edition, revised, published 1841.

Well bound in full polished calf with gilt bordered diced boards, gilt decorated edges to boards and elaborately decorated spines arranged in 6 compartments by 5 raised bands, compartments 2 and 4. Marbled end papers and page edges. Previous owner's name, W Whately, hand written to preliminary blanks of two volumes.

Internally clean other than an occasional mark, some age toning , foxing to first and last few pages and 3 hinges with split paper. Externally some marks, wear and a little loss to leather to a couple of spine heads. Some loss to gilding and a split down the first 2 compartments of the rear hinge. Small part of title label to Political Economy in compartment 4 is missing, does not affect lettering and part of the label to same compartment of Essays on St Paul appears to have split away and been re-stuck. A smart quartet.
