1872 the Works of Alfred Tennyson. Six Volume Book Set.

19th century
Description

'The Works Of Alfred Tennyson', published by Strahan & Co, London, 1872.

Tennyson was a consummate poetic artist, consolidating and refining the traditions bequeathed to him by his predecessors in the Romantic movement - especially Wordsworth, Byron, and Keats. His poetry is remarkable for its metrical variety, rich descriptive imagery, and exquisite verbal melodies

Each volume is fully bound in a rich brown leather with five raised bands to the spine. Title and date of publication gilt stamped to spine. All page edges gilt. All volumes show shelf wear. There is degradation to the leather binding in areas, most notably to the hinge joints of some volumes. There is some marking to the top gilt page edge of all volumes.

The interior has some spotting to preliminary pages but otherwise are in good order throughout.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Victorian bookbinding often featured full or partial leather covers, typically calfskin or morocco leather, decorated with gold leaf lettering and blind tooling along the spine.

Nineteenth-century volumes were crafted using tanned animal hides, rag paper, sewn linen cords, and gilt leafing applied to spine details or page edges.

Authentic period books feature natural surface wear, raised spine bands formed over internal sewing cords, period publication dates on title pages, and age-consistent oxidisation of gilding.

These volumes can be arranged upright on a bookshelf, stacked horizontally on a coffee table to elevate small decorative items, or displayed on a mantlepiece.

Store volumes vertically away from direct sunlight and heat sources, maintain stable humidity, and dust gently using a dry, soft-bristled brush.
