Handsome Kurdish Carpet, West Persia, Late 19th Century, 3.33m X 2.04m (10'11" X 6'9")

19th century
Description

Woven on an all wool foundation this antique Kurdish carpet from Persian Kurdistan, West Persia, has great presence. A boldly drawn intricate anchor medallion floats above a rich sapphire field. The weaver has dispensed with all secondary ornamentation around the medallion, but has added lovely golden yellow spandrels and terracotta borders. It is a very classical piece with wonderful hand spun wool and natural dyes. It has survived in very good condition with only minor signs of wear and tear commensurate with its age. Professionally cleaned in our workshops. This handsome carpet would make a colourful and striking addition to your decorative scheme, period or contemporary.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Kurdish carpets from the late 19th century are traditional tribal textiles woven in western Persia. They are characterised by saturated indigo and madder dyes, bold geometric medallions, stepped pediments, and secondary border motifs influenced by regional nomadic traditions.

These rugs are hand-knotted using locally sourced hand-spun wool for both the pile and foundation. Natural vegetable and mineral dyes create the distinct palette, resulting in a durable, heavy-pile structure designed for insulation and longevity.

Authenticity is indicated by asymmetrical knot construction, subtle colour variations (abrash) caused by natural dye batches, and webbed or braided fringes. Antique examples also demonstrate hand-overcast selvages and slight structural irregularities typical of tribal looms.

An antique carpet can serve as a grounded focal point in a living room, dining hall, or study. Interior designers often pair dark indigo and terracotta textiles with neutral flooring, natural timber furniture, or tailored leather seating to create visual contrast.

Preservation requires regular suction-only vacuuming without a rotating beater bar to avoid pulling fibres. The carpet should be rotated annually to balance wear and light exposure, placed over a quality rug pad, and professionally cleaned using specialised low-moisture methods.
