Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

French Empire figural mantel clocks typically feature elaborate bronzework, depicting classical, historical, or allegorical subjects mounted beside or atop the clock mechanism. Popularised in the early nineteenth century, these timepieces combine precise horological engineering with gilded sculptural elements mounted on solid plinths.

These clocks were predominantly cast in bronze or brass and finished with ormolu, a process of gilt finishing using mercury fire-gilding. The dials were commonly made of hand-painted enamel or silvered metal, often housed in heavy cast cases featuring intricate chased ornamentation.

Authentic period examples feature heavy cast bronze components with fine hand-chased detailing rather than lightweight modern alloys. Horological markers often include maker stamps on the movement plate, hand-cut steel hands, and natural age wear on the gilt surface finish.

A figural clock serves as a focal point when placed centrally on a fireplace mantelpiece, console table, or sideboard. Pairing the gilded bronze finish with contrasting dark timber surfaces or neutral backdrops highlights its architectural silhouette and decorative details.

Dust the clock casing gently with a soft dry brush or microfibre cloth, avoiding chemical polishes or water which can degrade the original gilt layer. Mechanical movements require periodic specialist horological servicing to clean and oil the gear train.
