French Clock Garniture Set Under Glass Domes

19th century
Description

This striking 19th-century French clock set comprises three pieces: a central gilt brass mantel clock flanked by two porcelain urns, each housed beneath its own glass dome for preservation and display. The central clock features a gilded brass case with ornate detailing, including floral motifs, scrollwork, and a sculpted finial. The dial is adorned with Roman numerals and delicate hands, framed by a decorative bezel. The movement is likely an 8-day mechanical, typical of French craftsmanship from the late 1800s. Each urn is richly decorated with hand-painted figural scenes and floral embellishments, set against a soft porcelain ground. Gilt accents highlight the contours and handles, while the black bases provide contrast and stability. The glass domes not only protect the pieces but also elevate their presentation, suggesting they were cherished and possibly displayed in a formal salon or parlour.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A clock garniture is a decorative matching ensemble originating in France, comprising a central mantel clock flanked by two ornamental pieces such as urns, vases, or candelabras. Popularised during the 18th and 19th centuries, these sets were designed to bring symmetry and balance to a fireplace mantelpiece.

These ensembles were typically constructed from cast bronze or brass finished with fire gilding (ormolu), often accented with hand-painted porcelain or enamel panels. Many sets were enclosed within hand-blown glass cloches supported by ebonised wooden bases to prevent dust accumulation.

Authentic period examples often feature stamped movement makers marks, fine hand-chiseled cast bronze fittings, and hand-painted porcelain scenes. Hand-blown glass domes will exhibit minor period characteristic irregularities, such as slight air bubbles or thickness variations.

Display the entire three-piece set along a fireplace mantelpiece or credenza to maintain historical symmetry. The reflective glass domes and metallic finishes work well as a focal arrangement against rich paint colours or architectural panelling.

Dust the glass cloches regularly using a soft microfibre cloth, handling them carefully by the base to avoid stress on the glass. Avoid chemical cleaners or metal polishes on the gilt surfaces, using only a dry soft-bristled brush to clear dust from intricate casting.
