Georgian Mahogany Bird Cage Tip Table

18th century
For Sale by Andros Antiques
Description

This Georgian Mahogany Bird Cage Tip Table has a lot of charm and charisma. Being constructed of superior quality dense Mahogany, giving it an exceptionally good weight and stability. The base has three legs showing a generous sweep to them, and the centre column is also of a decent size. The birdcage itself has its columns turned to match the design of the centre column which is a genuinely nice touch.

The wedge to the top of the column means that the top can be rotated if required, with the top being secured by its catch. The one-piece top has some lovely figuring to it, and has faded to a wonderful mellow colour. The whole table displays sublime patination, with the base having a much sort after crust to it.

Wearing its age with pride and all the better for it, this handsome and extremely useful table could be put to many uses around the house.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in the 18th century, a birdcage tilt-top table features a hinged wooden block mechanism beneath a circular top that allows the surface to tip vertically and rotate 360 degrees around the central column.

These tables were predominantly crafted from solid dense mahogany or native oak, utilizing hand-cut joinery, wrought iron or brass catches, and hand-turned central columns.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-planed undersides, irregular hand-cast brass hardware, hand-cut dovetails on the birdcage block, and natural uneven wear on the tripod feet.

Position the table in a room corner or alcove with the top tipped vertically to display the rich timber grain as decorative wall interest when not required for service.

Dust the timber regularly with a soft dry cloth and apply beeswax polish periodically, ensuring the piece is kept away from direct heat sources and damp environments.
