Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Davenport desk is a small, compact writing desk named after Captain Davenport, who first commissioned the design in the late 18th century. It features a sloped writing surface above a chest of side-facing drawers and often includes a stationery compartment at the top.

Victorian Davenport desks were predominantly constructed using solid walnut, burr walnut veneers, mahogany, or rosewood. The writing slope usually features an inset leather surface, complemented by brass castors and turned wooden handles.

Authentic 19th-century Davenport desks typically feature hand-cut dovetail joints on the side drawers, original brass castors, genuine wood veneer over solid frames, and period-correct lock mechanisms. Victorian examples frequently incorporate carved cabriole legs or scrolling supports.

Due to its compact footprint, a Davenport desk functions well in smaller living spaces, home offices, or hallways. It can be positioned near a window as a functional writing station or incorporated into a reading nook alongside period lighting and traditional seating.

Dust the wood regularly with a soft, dry lint-free cloth and apply a high-grade beeswax polish annually to protect the walnut finish. Avoid placing the desk near direct heat sources or in direct sunlight to prevent veneer warping and colour fading.
